Detroit car manufacturer is finding a method to utilize recycled plastics used as material for polyester fiber manufacture of car seats. For this purpose, Ford took the cloth makers to integrate the use of plastic bottles from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into the seat material.
Ford aims to divert about 2 million plastic bottles from landfills to be used on cars like the Focus Electric which, according to the manufacturer will be the first to use the vehicle interior that is 100 percent of clean technology.
Ford has been looking for ways to cut carbon emissions through better materials derived from recycled or renewable materials since 2001, when Ford formed Biomaterials and Plastics Research team.
In 2007 Ford began using foam made from soy to the car seat on a Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator. And after that they make use of their material in components such as the deflector shield, cup holder inserts and carpet flooring.
October last year, Ford said it has reached an agreement with the Scotts Miracle-Gro to develop ways to use coconut husks to reinforce plastic materials.
A month later, Ford Focus Electric began to receive orders, which is a battery-electric vehicles Ford's first mass production is estimated to have a cruising range of 112 km for a single charge which is equivalent to Nissan Leaf.
However, Ford claims the Focus Electric only takes half to recharge using 240 volt voltage source compared with Leaf Nissan and Ford also brags his vehicle was equivalent to 42.5 km / liter with an EPA rating.
